BBC ALBA charts the story of award-winning community newspaper Am Pàipear

August 2, 2016

ampaipear

It was a newspaper that was started with the aim of giving a voice to the community.

Now, four decades on, BBC ALBA examines the story of Am Pàipear which has moved from humble beginnings to become an acclaimed, award-winning title in an ever-changing media landscape.

In this latest edition of Trusadh, as well as telling the story of how it all began in South Uist in 1976, we meet those who have contributed and played a part in the paper’s life up to the present day.

As Am Pàipear celebrates its 40th anniversary, we look back at how instrumental the title has been in highlighting key issues that have impacted the community over the decades.

Trusadh looks at how Am Pàipear has reflected the changing community view in relation to many major events, including the influx of military presence, changes in education and health provision, and matters pertaining to the land and environment – all while maintaining a unique island humour in its perspective.

Amongst those who contribute to the programme are Jean Branagan, Mike Russell, Ruaraidh ‘Poker’ Macdonald, Andrew McMorrine, Archie MacKay, Floraidh MacLean, Helen Forbes, Wilma Duncan, Father Colin MacInnes, Ena MacDonald, Christine MacIntyre, Ronald MacInnes and current Am Pàipear editor, Iain Stephen Morrison.

Narrated by Angela MacEachan, Trusadh – Am Pàipear is a fascinating look at how a much-loved newspaper has progressed over 40 years.

‘Trusadh – Am Pàipear’ (MacTV for BBC ALBA) will be broadcast on BBC ALBA on Monday 8th August at 9pm.
