Balranald Nature Reserve set for record year

July 12, 2016

balranald1

RSPB Scotland’s Stuart Taylor reports that visitor numbers at Balranald have soared as the North Uist nature reserve celebrates its 50th anniversary…

Established fifty years ago by RSPB Scotland, local crofters and landlords, Balranald Nature Reserve has become one of the most popular tourist locations in the Western Isles. Initially set up to monitor the incredible wildlife of the area, it has gone on to become a major bird watching destination.

Twelve years ago – in 2004 – visitor numbers were just over 9,000, and estimated to bring £1.38 million into the local economy. This year, present visitor numbers indicate the reserve will have attracted more than 15,000 people.

Figures from 2004 were calculated to support the equivalent of almost four full-time jobs, which will now have increased significantly. The experience at Balranald is reflected elsewhere with wildlife tourism growing in many parts of the world and helping to sustain remote communities.

However, increasing visitor numbers also brings demand for improved visitor facilities. RSPB Scotland upgraded the small visitor centre (pictured) and car park at Balranald in 1996 with help from Highlands and Islands Enterprise and Comhairle nan Eilean Siar. While the visitor centre is standing up well to the increasing numbers, the car park sometimes struggles to cope.

Jamie Boyle, RSPB site manager for Balranald, says: “Increasing numbers of visitors are great news for the island but we do need to be careful. While the breeding season is a popular time to visit, it is also the time when the birds are at their most sensitive to disturbance. We need to manage the area so that people can see the wildlife but not get too close.”

In order to cater for the growing demand, RSPB Scotland staff run a programme of guided walks, which were attended by more than 700 people last year. These walks provide the chance to see birds and plants of the machair and croftlands.

News of all this wonderful wildlife is spreading further afield and several organised holiday firms now feature the Western Isles as a major destination in their brochures. Tour leaders from Speyside Wildlife, Heatherlea, Norfolk Birding and Oriole Adventures are now familiar faces as they bring their groups to the islands annually to see what they can find. Balranald is invariably a stop on the itinerary.

Also helping to attract keen birdwatchers are the regular arrival of rarities on the islands, with the recent presence of a Gyr Falcon and a Black-billed Cuckoo proving particularly lucrative for campsites and other accommodation providers.

However, the future rests with young people and it is very encouraging that people of all ages attend the walks during the season, with families with children particularly prominent. We very much hope and expect that Balranald will attract even more visitors in the next 50 years which, in turn, should help to secure the prosperity of the vitally important tourist industry in these islands.

Am Pàipear gets its 40th birthday party started!

July 8, 2016

exhibitionweb-1

Am Pàipear launched a programme of 40th anniversary celebrations with a bang last night, officially opening an exhibition through which the archive of the newspaper is now opened to the public.

Guests flocked from across the islands to Sgoil Lionacleit for a first glimpse at the exhibition, which has been prepared with the kind support of Museum nan Eilean.

Running from now until the beginning of September (details below) this display – entitled THE AM PAIPEAR COLLECTION – is made up of illustrations and photographs featured in the paper over the last four decades. Editions from all the way back in 1976 are also available for the community to access and enjoy.

Ahead of the opening last night, some of the tutors currently working at Ceòlas – Rachel Walker, Patsy Seddon, Shelly Campbell and Allan Henderson – performed alongside talented local youngsters Dòmhnall Henderson, Niall MacDonald and Joanna MacDonald.

Cllr Uisdean Robertson spoke to audience about the important role of local newspapers in our democracy, before Alasdair Allan MSP addressed the crowd and cut the ribbon, officially declaring the exhibition open.

Sony Davidson – who has a long and continuing involvement with Am Pàipear – then cut the special #AP40 birthday cake prepared for the occasion, which was promptly served to those in attendance.

Guests then entered the museum for a first look at the display of illustrations, photographs and past editions.

Meanwhile, in the cafeteria, glasses of prosecco and soft drinks were being poured, ready to serve along with an incredible selection of canapés prepared by Island Deli with support from Langass Lodge, Salar Smokehouse, Kallin Shellfish, MacLean’s Bakery, and Hebridean Smokehouse.

Iain Stephen Morrison, Editor of Am Pàipear, said: “We would like to thank absolutely everyone who came along and contributed in any way to the launch of this very special exhibition.

“It is a lot of work for a team as small as ours to pull together an event like this and we are by no means experts. So after a nervous couple of days and lots of hard work it was a great relief to witness so many people enjoying the evening and the many pieces that make up our archive.

“As I have said repeatedly in the media over the past few days, this milestone and success does not belong to Am Pàipear, but the community that launched it and continues to take ownership of the paper.

“This collection in Museum nan Eilean is all the stories of our islands. Our wish on this birthday is that the collection will continue to grow, that for Am Pàipear, life will truly begin at forty.”

£10,000 funding boost for EDF

June 24, 2016

EDFweb

Eilean Dorcha Festival (EDF) has secured £10,000 support from Awards for All.

Taking place on Liniclate machair on Friday 29th and Saturday 30th July, EDF is the first ever music festival for Benbecula.  Acts including Skippinish, Vatersay Boys, Trail West and Donnie Munro will take to the stage over a weekend like no other for the islands.

Funding from Awards for All – a partnership by sportscotland and the Big Lottery Fund – will help cover the costs of setting up the annual festival.

EDF Chairman Roddy MacKay commented “We are delighted to get this award to help us deliver Benbecula’s first music festival. Not since Runrig played at Liniclate more than 20 years ago has there been anything like this held in Uist. With former frontman Donnie Munro returning, it’s sure to be a momentous weekend.

“We will have nearly 20 acts this year and there’s sure to be something for everyone. This award will allow us to showcase Benbecula and the Southern Isles and what they have to offer at a crucial time for the tourism industry here in the islands.”

A spokesperson for Awards for All said: “These grants, totalling just under one million pounds will benefit over 130 groups across the country and shows the variety of projects that can be funded through Awards for All. We are always surprised at the difference a relatively small amount of money can make providing support and advice to people in communities across Scotland and wish all of these groups the best of luck for the future.”

Awards for All Scotland gives out grants of between £500 and £10,000 to projects that bring communities together to enjoy a range of activities.  Groups can download this form here www.biglotteryfund.org.uk/awardsforallscotland

PICTURE SECIAL: Panther sighting on North Uist

June 15, 2016

Photo - Alan Woodward

It’s the story everyone has been talking about since the latest Am Pàipear was published at the beginning of the month. Could there really be a panther roaming in the wild on North Uist? Some readers have reacted with skepticism or amusement…others are not so sure. Am Pàipear here publishes the full collection of images received from those who spotted the strange creature on the Committee Road so as to try and give a fuller understanding of what they saw and what it may be…

Here is the story as told in your latest Am Pàipear.  Scroll down for images…

These exclusive never-before-seen pictures capture the moment a group of birdwatchers spotted a very large “panther-like” cat close to Sollas on North Uist…

Members of the Glamorgan Bird Club from Wales were rounding off a successful week of birdwatching when they spotted a creature they never expected to see in their wildest dreams.

On the final day of their trip – Friday 21st May – the group set up their base at the viewing point on the Committee Road near Sollas. With telescopes and binoculars trained towards the old plantation on the west side of the road, the club members were enjoying great views of the resident raptors.

Then – in a moment they can still scarcely believe – their eyes were caught by the sight of a large black animal prowling close to the perimeter fence encircling the woodland. Unbelievable as it sounds, what the birders firmly believe they saw was a panther.

Quickly grabbing their cameras, some members of the group were able to take pictures – published here in Am Pàipear for the first time – which although shot at a distance and therefore slightly blurry, give a solid impression of the size and form of the creature.

Club member Adrian Meredith – who was on his first visit to the islands and enjoying the opportunity to view rare birds he had never seen before – describes the unlikely encounter with the panther in vivid detail.

“We had been there a week,” he recalled.

“Our base was Nunton House Hostel, but we travelled all over each day. On our final day on the islands we made our way to the viewing point on the Committee Road. We had been there for a while and had seen a Golden Eagle, a Sea Eagle and a Hen Harrier. Then we looked up towards the plantation and saw this huge cat. There were ten of us there from Glamorgan Bird Club and we all saw the animal.”

He went on to describe how the big cat first appeared, before vanishing and then reappearing.

“It was sitting down at first,” he said.

“Then it disappeared into the undergrowth. We kept watching and about twenty minutes later it reappeared before moving into the woodland.

“We all agreed it was a very big cat. It moved like a cat, and seemed quite powerful. It had a certain muscularity.”

Adrian said that if the cat noticed the nearby presence of people, it did not seem bothered. He described the reaction of the group as one of stunned silence.

“It’s not often you can get a word in edgeways with our group,” he said. “We were all so shocked. We thought the otters were impressive!

“I just can’t understand how it could have got there. In the back of a van maybe? Who knows?”

Adrian’s story matches the account of events given by fellow Glamorgan Bird Club member Alan Woodward.

He said: “It was our final day and our last chance to get some good sightings of raptors. We were all set up with scopes trained when we saw this black beast close to the pine trees in the distance.

“I think we all thought it was a domestic cat – judging by its movements – before we realised it was so big. Then it disappeared out of sight into the long grass and heather.

“Our only conclusion was that we had seen a black panther.”

He went on to recall how the animal reappeared before moving in to the plantation. At this time Alan acted quickly to capture shots of the mysterious creature with his camera.

He continued: “We were trying to work out its size, but nobody was keen to go up and measure the fence posts for comparison.

“When it was in view, it didn’t look our way. It seemed very focussed on what it was doing.”

Asked whether it was possible he and the other group members had made a mistake – that perhaps they had seen and photographed some other animal that appeared like a large cat – Alan says no.

“Some of our group are very experienced birders,” he explained.

“They can identify birds literally from miles away – their eyes are so well trained. They viewed this animal in detail and there was no question in their minds that what they saw was a panther.”

Large cat sightings are not uncommon in Scotland with several reports having been made of “panther-like” creatures spotted in the countryside.

In recent times – perhaps most notably – an off-duty police dog handler captured video footage of a large black cat near railway tracks in Helensburgh in 2009.

In the same year Hercules the Bear was loose on North Uist – 1980 – a puma was captured alive near Inverness. ‘Felicity’ – as she became known – spent the rest of her life in the Highland Wildlife Park.

Although sporadic alleged sightings persist across the UK, it is widely considered implausible that a population of large cats exists undetected in the wild.

As to how a panther could have come to live on North Uist – or otherwise what did Glamorgan Bird Club members photograph on the island – the answer is not clear.

Westford Inn up for top island pub award

June 15, 2016

11147861_10155523064470128_528450932850011308_n

Westford Inn has made the shortlist for the Scottish Bar and Pub Awards.

Under new ownership since late last year, the North Uist pup is in the final four of the ‘Island Bar of the Year’ category, along with Macgochans in Mull, Drift Inn in Arran, and the Old Inn on Skye.

A record-breaking 1400 nominations were received for the awards, which are run by industry magazine DRAM and aim to recognise excellence in the Scottish licensed trade.

DRAM instigated the first ever licensed trade awards 21 years ago, and today the entry has never been stronger. Some of the biggest names in the drinks industry – including the BII, Caledonian Brewery, Diageo Disaronno, Gordon & Macphail, Inverarity Morton, Isle of Arran Distillers, Kopparberg, Maxxium / Mixxit, Molson Coors and Tennents, as well as Glencairn Crystal, Bright Signals, Flow Training and the Sunday Mail – back the awards.

Entries have flooded in from as far away as Mull, Benbecula, Cupar, St Andrews, Ayr and across the Central Belt as well.

Now that nominations have been received from the public who voted online, organisers want you to help them pick the best of the best by becoming a secret shopper.

Organiser Susan Young explained: “We’ve had a massive response to this year’s call for nominations and lots of quality entries from around Scotland. As a result, although we have a team of mystery shoppers already, there is always room for more. So if there are any folk out there who consider themselves discerning, please get them to contact dram@mail.com and tell us why they think they have the right credentials.”

She continues: “Our mystery shoppers will initially wine and dine and check out the best craft bars and service, and once they have given us their feedback, we send a panel of judges. It’s a thorough process, but very enjoyable as well.

Finalists will be invited to the awards ceremony on 16th August at the Hilton Hotel in Glasgow, where they find out whether they are recipients of the bespoke crystal trophy made especially for the awards by Glencairn Crystal.

Shortlisted nominees can also enjoy a party and celebrate in style. This year – with Rio hosting the Olympic Games – the awards have a Brazilian theme.

St Kilda Challenge well underway

June 10, 2016

Untitled-1

A fleet of 30 yachts is well on the way to one of the furthest outposts of the UK as part of the inaugural St Kilda Challenge.

Organised by Comann Na Mara, the challenge is the first event of its kind to set its sights on the UK’s remotest archipelago.

Approximately half of the yachts are racing the course, with the rest cruising to St Kilda as a flotilla.

Both fleets will use the islands as a turning point, which will take in a distance of some 100 nautical miles return.

Participants travelled from far and wide – from destinations including Shetland, Cornwall and Ireland – to assemble at Lochmaddy yesterday evening.

They then travelled to the start point in the Sound of Harris early this morning.

It is likely that the faster yachts will complete the race within 24 hours of setting off, with the cruise in company yachts taking a little longer.

Ashore in Lochmaddy, a three-day festival is in full swing, with a variety of cultural events underway.

The fleet brings together some interesting yachts, including AJ Wanderlust, Charlene Howard’s 45ft sloop which has travelled far and wide around the world and goes in the racing fleet, as well as 67ft Swan, a traditional Shetland fishing boat owned and operated by The Swan Trust which will take part in the cruise in company – built in 1900, she is also the oldest vessel to be making the journey.

The challenge brings the windswept St Kilda island group into sharp focus – helping to highlight the UK’s only dual World Heritage Site, recognised for both its natural and cultural significance, in what will be the 30th anniversary of it receiving its designation in 1986.

Sailing’s governing body RYA Scotland and the Scottish Sailing Institute, which specialises in the organisation of national and international events in Scottish waters, have been closely involved in the project along with Clyde Cruising Club, and CalMac is offering significant support as proud prime sponsor. Collaboration partners on the event advisory board also include Ocean Youth Trust, Sail Scotland, National Trust for Scotland, Highlands and Islands Enterprise, University of St Andrews, Scottish Natural Heritage, Comhairle nan Eilean Siar, Harris Tweed and Harris Distillery.

New minister for North Uist Free Church

June 10, 2016

Untitled-1

Rev Calum Smith will be inducted as minister of North Uist Free Church next weekend.

For the past 18 months the islande congregation has been vacant after previous minister Rev Ewen Matheson accepted a call to Cross (Ness) on the Isle of Lewis.

Mr Smith has been minister of Dumfries Free Church since 2011, and a special service welcoming him to the Uist community will be held in the Carinish church on Saturday 18th June at 11am.

Stornoway’s Rev James Maciver will preach and preside, Rev Malcolm Macdonald from Callanish will address the newly inducted minister, and Rev Lachie Macdonald from South Uist and Benbecula will speak to the congregation.

Rev Calum Smith said: “We are looking forward to ministering in the congregation of North Uist, Grimsay and Berneray and, with the Lord’s help, become acquainted with the congregation and serve the communities here.

“It is not easy leaving a congregation and we remember with thanksgiving the people of Dumfries and that they may have a short time of vacancy.

“The Southern Isles is made up of many scattered communities and there is a vibrancy here with much going on.

“We are looking forward to working alongside the congregation of South Uist and Benbecula in being an integral part of the community and sharing the good news of Jesus Christ.”

Mr Smith and his family, wife Johan and children Joni, Marissa and Danny, recently moved up to the area and are now settled into the manse adjoining the church.

He continued: “Since we arrived in Uist we have been blessed with wall to wall sunshine and we are assured by the locals that this is how it always is!

“But our prayer is that of Psalm 67, ‘God be merciful and bless us, shine upon us with your face, that the earth may know your actions and all lands your saving grace’.”

Rev Calum Smith is originally from Shawbost on the Isle of Lewis. After leaving school, he studied engineering in Stornoway and Glasgow, and was in the Merchant Navy for eight years, sailing to many different parts of the world. He still loves the sea and goes fishing whenever he can.

Latterly, he spent a couple of years working with the Stornoway Port Authority, before being led to the ministry. Prior to beginning his studies at the Free Church College (now Edinburgh Theological Seminary), he completed a degree course in Rural Development studies through the UHI in Stornoway.

He is married to Johan, who is from Barvas, also on the Isle of Lewis. They have three children – Joni, Marissa and Danny. Johan worked in Gaelic Development and, in particular, the preparation of Gaelic educational resources prior to being a mum.

Calum was inducted to Dumfries Free Church in November 2011, at that point ending a five-year vacancy.

Over the past couple of years there has been significant encouragement through the ongoing evangelistic work by the Dumfries congregation – including men’s prayer breakfasts, curry nights, women’s Bible studies and children’s holiday clubs.

This has resulted in 11 new members as well as an increase in attendance at Sunday worship and the midweek prayer meeting.

It is expected that Mr Smith will take his first service as minister of North Uist Free Church on Sunday 19th June.
