Fuel
Campaign off to Flying Start
Support for Am Pàipear’s petition to the Scottish
Government for a fair deal on the price of rural fuel has
been received from far and wide in the first two weeks since
the petition was hosted on the Scottish Parliament’s
e-petitions website. Signatures have so far been gathered
from not only the Western Isles, but across Scotland, the
UK and the world in favour of our campaign for fairer prices
in the more remote communities across the country. Our campaign
has been joined by politicians across the party spectrum,
proving that the issue is not one of party politics but an
issue that affects us all. Am Pàipear’s petition
was granted by the Petitions Office of the Scottish Parliament
only two weeks ago, yet has already been signed online by
more than 1,800 people, with dozens more signing paper versions
of the petition. Am Pàipear will be taking the petition
around all the holiday events throughout July, so do look
out for our staff and please do sign the paper petition if
you have not yet done so online...

Uist Art On The Map
HAPPY 5th Birthday to Art on the Map - which first took place
in 2004 and goes from strength to strength. Once again the
annual art festival that is the Art on the Map Studio Trail

Uist artists open their studio doors, arrange exhibitions
and run a series of workshops and events. A record number
of participants - over 40 - are joining this wonderful celebration
of artistic excellence on the islands. It offers a unique
opportunity for the work of artists of all kinds to be seen

Grimsay
Boat Day ’08
The weather was the best ever - warm and sunny with a light
breeze at the water’s edge - and people turned out
in their hundreds to celebrate the 10th Grimsay Boat Day
on 31 May. From rowing of new dinghies at the pontoon on
the slipway, to art workshop and stalls in the Boatshed
itself, from teas by the Grimsay ladies in the Woodshop,
to a magnificent barbeque from Stepping Stone, the Grimsay
Boatshed was the ideal site. People relaxed, ate plenty,
and chatted with friends and neighbours. All had a chance
to try rowing the dinghies built by S3/S4 from Sgoil Lionacleit,
or to race them against time if adventurous. Special guests
were S5 and S6 pupils from the Am Bata project at Plockton
High School, who brought their newly completed and very
impressive boat to join the Gathering...

Over
60s Get Together at Balivanich Hall
Over 60s groups all the way from Berneray to Eriskay came
together on Friday 27 June at the new Community Hall in
Balivanich. The event, which was funded by ‘Help the
Aged’, was superbly organised and run by Tagsa Uibhist,
who called upon drivers, office staff and volunteers to
ably cater for the needs of the 80 or so folk who attended.
A superb lunch was followed up with musical entertainment,
including a moving performance by singer Neil Campbell,
a polished display of Highland Dancing by Lauren Skinner
and the opportunity to work off some of the calories on
the dance floor by the guests themselves...

A Busy
Time for the Book Trust
Talks, trips, a summer exhibition and a full programme of
events through the summer months all go towards keeping
the Islands Book Trust busy, both in Uist and Barra and
in Lewis and Harris. The Operation Hardrock: St. Kilda Summer
exhibition is now open in Nunton Steadings in the care of
Emma Leitch (pictured) who has been appointed to a Graduate
Placement post with the Trust. Emma will be based at Nunton
Steadings for the coming year and in addition to taking
care of the exhibition and other local events, she will
also assist in some of the wider aspects of the Trust’s
work including membership promotion, education links and
Gaelic policy. The Trust is grateful to CnaG for assisting
with the cost of establishing this post...
