Am Pàipear started as a newspaper in 1976 and ever since has delivered a valued news and information service to more than 4000 individuals resident on five islands within the Outer Hebrides.

Print remains at the heart of the enterprise although Am Pàipear strives to inform and engage with an even wider audience through its subscription-based multimedia online service and original content created for Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and TikTok.

Am Pàipear is a record six-time winner of the award for ‘Community Newspaper of the Year’ and also a former winner of the prize for ‘best use of Digital Media’ at the Highlands and Islands Media Awards.

Am Pàipear trades as a social enterprise, with a board of volunteer directors, and is a subsidiary of Uist Council of Voluntary Organisations.

  • Ada Campbell
    Ada Campbell is a former principal teacher of Mathematics and acts as chair of UCVO Trading Ltd, which publishes Am Pàipear. She has had a long involvement with Uist-based voluntary organisations including economic development and the provision of full-time community pre-school nursery services. Originally from Glasgow, Ada and her late husband have family ties to the Outer Hebrides and Uist in particular, where they have lived for the last 52 years.
  • Alasdair MacEachen
    Alasdair MacEachen lives Benbecula, where he was born and raised, and is now winding down from a career in local authority Environmental Health spanning over more than four decades. He is a keen supporter of the promotion of traditional skills, local and island history and the Gaelic language. Alasdair resides on the family croft on Benbecula where he breeds Blackface sheep.

  • Andrew Ross
    Andrew Ross moved with his family to Berneray in 2002 and, as well as being involved in a number of other community organisations, has served more than ten years on the board of UCVO Trading Ltd, which publishes Am Pàipear. Andrew’s background is in trade journalism, and he was editor of a successful B2B publication for a number of years in the mid-1990s before making the move into public relations, an area in which he has worked ever since. He and his wife run an accommodation business in Berneray and also croft on a very small scale, keeping a flock of rare breed Soay sheep.
