Peacock urges Government to choose islands for broadband pilot
Highlands and Islands Labour MSP Peter Peacock is urging Enterprise Minister Jim Mather to persuade the Westminster government to choose the Western Isles as part of a pilot scheme for improved broadband services.
He was speaking after being told by Mr Mather that he understands that the UK Department for Business, Innovation and Skill and its in-house body Broadband Delivery UK have already identified the East Sutherland and Edderton ward as a potential pilot location.
Mr Peacock said: ‘This suggests the pilots are going to be small areas and while this is obviously good news for East Sutherland and Edderton the Western Isles needs it more! I am disappointed that such a small area of Scotland is being considered for a pilot. We will be urging a more adventurous approach, the Western Isles in particular is the area in the UK with the greatest unmet need for improvement.’
