Allan welcomes go-ahead for Western Isles community renewable projects
Western Isles SNP MSP, Alasdair Allan, has today welcomed news that six community – owned companies in the Western Isles are to be given permission by Ofgem to connect 11 wind turbines to the National Grid.
Alasdair Allan commented: ‘It is encouraging to hear the news that six island communities, stretching all the way from Galson in Lewis to Uist and Barra, will not have to wait for a new subsea interconnector sometime in the future, before being able to connect to the National Grid. They should instead, all being well, hear very shortly of grid connection dates.
This is significant news for these communities in the Western Isles, with these turbines due to bring a significant investment into the local economy. All of this will have been achieved by local people with the profits staying locally to be reinvested in the islands.
I have been contacted in the past by a number of these community companies regarding their troubles in getting a connection to the National Grid. I am encouraged to hear that an earlier grid connection now looks possible.’
