Stòras Uibhist continues
to be blighted by controversy
NOT for the first time, the South Uist community company, Stòras Uibhist finds itself embroiled in controversy as members accuse its directors of underhand tactics at an Extraordinary General Meeting (EGM) called to make changes to the company’s constitution.
The meeting was ostensibly called to make alterations to the existing Memorandum and Articles as a result of new legislation. However, some members expressed concern that the company used the new law as a smokescreen to bring in a controversial, non-statutory change allowing the present directors to continue to re-stand for election perpetually.
Under the previous constitution directors were forced to step away from the company for a period of at least 12 months after serving two full terms (six years) in office. The new Articles do away with this rule, instead replacing it with a new rule that states that ‘Retiring Directors shall be eligible for re-appointment’.
Opponents of the rule-change requested that it be separated from the statutory requirements and voted on separately. This option was declined by the board. Members have accused the company of using underhand tactics to force through an undemocratic rule change that sees Stòras Uibhist adpoting a constitution more often associated with dictatorships and that the company is attempting to ensure that the current regime can remain in place in perpetuity…
