Sustainable Uist wins CCF award
Sustainable Uist (Uibhist Sheasmhach), a recently formed Voluntary Association dedicated to reducing carbon emissions and maximising sustainability across the Uists, has just been awarded £82,420 by the Climate Challenge Fund.
Stephen Carter, chair of the Sustainable Uist committee, says “the group aims to initiate community-led, carbon emission reducing projects, raise awareness of climate crisis in Uist and promote sustainable lifestyles and liaise and network with local and global organisations”
Sustainable Uist has appointed Joanna Peteranna as project manager to deliver and co-ordinate carbon reduction programmes in the islands from Berneray to Eriskay. These include facilitating more local production of food through demonstration projects, working with residents to improve home energy efficiency, carrying out a feasibility study into a District Heating Scheme for Balivanich, further feasibility studies into off-grid renewable energy schemes, a Uist-wide Car and Lift Sharing Scheme and an associated website to act as a development tool and portal for community sustainable action.
There will be a free Sustainable Uist Launch/Ceilidh Event on the 15th of May at St. Mary’s Hall, Griminish starting at 7.30pm. Look out for posters. Your support and involvement is crucial to the success of the project. Anybody living in the Uists wishing to get involved or find out more about the groups plans should contact sustainableuist@googlemail.com
