Uist author shortlisted for literary award
LOCAL AUTHOR, Flora MacDonald’s book Coco is Crubagan has been shortlisted alongside some of Scotland’s top authors, including Iain Banks, Ian Rankin and Poet Laureate, Carol Ann Duffy, in this year’s Tesco Bank Summer Read; an exciting initiative to promote reading and new Scottish books.
Twenty titles, set in Scotland or written by Scottish authors, form the shortlist, ranging across different reading tastes, levels and formats, from fiction and non-fiction to adult, teen and children; English, Scots and Gaelic and graphic novel.
The judging panel for the shortlist included representatives from The Scottish Library and Information Council, Publishing Scotland, Edinburgh International Book Festival, The Herald and Glasgow Libraries.
Following the launch at the Aye Write! annual week-long book festival, held at Glasgow’s Mitchell Library from March 5-13, the shortlist will be promoted in public libraries across Scotland from March to August 2010. A public vote via www.heraldscotland.com will allow readers to select five winning titles and, ultimately, the ‘best’ book, with one voter winning a top of the range Sony eReader.
There there will be a series of special features on the shortlisted authors appearing in The Herald, and readings will be taking place at libraries across the country.
The winning authors (and voter) will be announced at a special closing event in August 2010 (date yet to be confirmed), being held to coincide with the Edinburgh International Book Festival.
Flora will be attending the launch of the competition at the Aye Write Festival in Glasgow’s Mitchell Library on Sunday 7th March at 7.45pm.
