Council health and wellbeing initiative
exceeds the 1000 subscription mark

The new Comhairle nan Eilean Siar health and wellbeing initiative ‘Slàinte Mhath’, which has been in operation for only a month at Ionad Spòrs Leòdhais before being gradually rolled out throughout the islands in the last few weeks, has reached the 1000 subscription mark! Between family and individual members 2255 individuals are now signed up to the hugely successful scheme, equating to 17% of the Lewis population under the age of 70.

Tony Wade, Facilities Manager at Ionad Spòrs Leòdhais commented: ‘The response of the public to Slàinte Mhath has been outstanding and has far exceeded our expectations. Every day we have a steady influx of individuals and families wanting to sign up and at present this shows no signs of abating. At present, we have 523 family memberships and 382 individuals as part of the scheme. It’s been absolutely fantastic to see the Sports Centre so busy and bursting with life. People are becoming increasingly aware of the benefits of regular exercise and this scheme makes it affordable for the whole family.’

Since being rolled out in Uist on the 25th of January, the Scheme is beginning to gain momentum with 27 family memberships and 23 individual memberships.

Lindsay MacDonald, Facilities Manager at Ionad Spòrs Lionacleit said: ‘The ‘Slàinte Mhath’ membership scheme is proving very successful at Ionad Spòrs Lionacleit. The games hall, fitness suite and swimming pool are all much busier. The scheme continues to attract people who have not used the sports centre since they were at school and occasional users have become regular users.’

Colin Gilmour, Health Promotion Manager at NHS Eileanan Siar said: ‘The introduction of a reduced membership scheme is an exciting development that NHS Eileanan Siar fully endorses. The new scheme is an important step in enabling the NHS to meet our targets in reducing heart disease and increasing level of physical activity in the islands.’
