Davis comments on Comhairle cuts
Commenting following last week’s council vote on cuts to services local Liberal Democrat prospective parliamentary candidate Jean Davis said, ‘Last weeks decision by the Comhairle to support the front line service cuts to services in the Western Isles calls into question the commitment of councillors to the welfare of their constituents and also calls in to question the commitment of SNP and Labour parties.
‘The vote was passed by twenty-five to four. Presumably the four were the SNP councillors who put forward sensible alternatives: though I have to say their response was rather late given that their councillors should have been involved in discussions on budget cuts for some time prior to the full council debate last Thursday!
‘I, and no doubt others, want to know also how Donald John Macsween, prospective Labour candidate, voted. Did he support the cuts or was he one of the two councillors who did not vote or abstained?
‘Local Labour activists have been noticeably silent on the issue.
‘I have already made clear my position on council cuts. Whilst unavoidable given the constraints placed on us by the Scottish SNP government they should not be focussed on vulnerable residents and those council employees least able to object.’
