Protecting Paradise: Ecotourism
opportunities are plentiful in the Uists
In order for us to achieve that sustainability we need to focus on sustainable activities which we can maintain for now and into the indefinite future. This falls into three key sectors of which the main aspects are environmental, social/cultural and economical. A closer look at these sectors outlines the thought behind them and how they can be applied to our businesses:
- Environmental ensures that the very environment we are trying to enjoy is protected and that any activity in which we participate does not damage or ruin it but ideally tries to benefit the environment.
- Socially and culturally we ensure that the activity does not harm but may regenerate and enhance the social structure or culture of the community where it takes place.
- Economically we try to ensure that the activity does not begin and then fail due to bad business practice or funding but continues to benefit the economic well being of the local community.
Taking all these three aspects into account for our activities is known as triple bottom line accounting. This simply means running a business, an organisation or a government office in such a way as not to destroy the very culture, environment and community on which it depends.
